Kingston Upon Hull Swimming Club got the New Year and long course season off to a very impressive start at the Rotherham Metro A/B gala on 21st and 22nd January in Sheffield. This was the first time in a 50m pool for many of the younger swimmers but they all took it in their stride and were incredibly supportive of each other. There were some courageous swims across all squads and some staggering personal best times. As usual, there was a strong team of support from KUHSC’s coaches and volunteers so all in all, it was a fabulous team effort.
Annabelle Clausen swam the 200m Individual Medley for the very first time and won an A-grade gold medal in the 200m backstroke. Alex Hattersley won a B-grade gold in the 100m butterfly and an A-grade silver in the 200m backstroke. Isaac Pannhausen won an impressive four A-grade medals, including a gold in the 200m back with a PB of 3:16.14. Millie Salmon came first in the Girls 14 years 50m Butterfly in a time of 31.40 and second in the 200m freestyle in 2:23.52. Louisa Shepherdson competed in 6 events. She finished a long weekend with a 6 second PB in the 100m freestyle, gaining the B grade gold medal. Ben Towse had a great weekend, winning 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. Aida Wherton clocked some astounding personal best times, taking 27 seconds off her 200m IM time and 53 seconds off her 200m backstroke. Ethan Winship had a very successful weekend, gaining PBs in all seven of his races.
Whilst gaining invaluable lessons in their sporting journeys and spending a weekend with their swimming friends, competing in a 50m pool provided excellent preparation for the forthcoming Yorkshire Championships.
