The North East Counties swimming championships is one of the biggest galas on the Kingston upon Hulls swimming clubs calendar. The Hull club had their best set of result at the Sunderland pool for a number of years, with the National squad alone bringing home 7 gold medals, 3 silvers and 5 bronze medals which was a fantastic achievement for the squad and the club as a whole.
In the Bagcat age group competing was 13 year old Shannon McGahey who had a great weekend achieving 2 gold medals. The 1st gold came in the 400 freestyle which Shannon swum a 9 second pb to win it in 4.32.76 beating 2nd place by 1 clear second, it was a well fought race. In another nail biting race the 2nd gold came in the 800 freestyle again with another big Pb of 11 seconds in a time of 9.22.23 but this time a lot closer gap to 2nd just over half a second lead. Other great races this weekend included the 400 IM finishing 4th with a 6 second PB, 7TH in the 200 free with a 4 second PB, 10TH in the 100 free and the final race of the weekend 6th in the 200 fly with a PB.
William Dennis age 14 took 7th place in the 400 free with a 9 second PB in a time of 4.22.18 also achieving P.B's in 100 free, 100 back, 7 second PB in 400 IM and final a 3 second PB in 200 back. William looked strong in all his races.
Junior A squad swimmer 13 year old Bailey Hairsine walked away from Sunderland with top ten finishes from all his seven races and an impressive four bronze medals to boot. In the 1500m freestyle he swam 18:03.66 and knocked 48 seconds off his previous best to start his medal haul and then took 18 seconds off his pb for the 400m IM to claim a second. Third place finishes in the 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly completed his medal tally for the weekend and he almost made it five when he narrowly missed out on the 200m butterfly, finishing 4th.
Regional squad swimmer Ben Chapman produced a top ten finish with an impressive swim in the 100 bk. Ben reduced his pb by nearly two seconds with a time of 1:13.24.
Junior B squad had 3 swimmers 10 year olds Evie Lees, Elizabeth Hawkard and 11 year old Lewis Collins.
Lily Hawkard; qualified for her first North Eastern Regional Championships setting big personal bests in the 100 Fly and 200 Fly. In the 100 Fly she finished 9th in the 10 years age group in 1.27.18 a four and a half second PB, in the 200 Fly Lily finished a creditable 5th after going out a little bit too hard she still knocked over 9 seconds off her personal best.
11 year old Lewis Collins had 5 top 10 placings , coming 10th in 200 back. In the 100 free he swam his way to a 12 year Yorkshire time and finished 10th. In the 400 I.M and 200 back it was new PB's and 9th place finishes with more Yorkshire qualifying times time. Lewis top swim came in the 100 back were his new PB time gained him his 12 year NER time and a very respectable 6th place.
In the Senior/Junior group competing was Matthew Sleight age 17 who also won gold in the 400 free final with a PB in a time of 3.55.89 clear lead of 3 seconds. Matthew also competed in the final for the 100 free which he came 9th, in the 200 free final he came 7th, in the 200 IM final finished 6th and to finish the weekend 9th in the 200 backstroke final.
Oche Igoche age 16 also managed to bring gold home in the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.90 and 5th place in the 100 free final in a time of 53.16.
Jace Cappleman age 14 competed in the finals for the 200 free finishing 8th in a time of 2.07.29 which was a PB and 10th in the 400 free in a time of 4.30.36.
Dervla Curran age 15 competed in finals obtaining silver in the 200 free in a time of 2.07.46 and bronze in the 400 free in a time of 4.28.29. In the 400 IM final finished 9th in a time of 5.05.15
Grace Dennis age 16 competed in the finals for 200 free which earned her a bronze medal in a time of 2.04.24 in the same final Amy Felgate also 16 finished 10th in a time of 2.10.34, Amy went on to swim in the 50 fly final which she came 6th in a time of 29.78. Grace also achieved silver in the 200 back final time of 2.22.43 which also saw Leah Altoft aged 17 take the bronze in a time of 2.24.05. Again Grace completed in the 100 free final coming 9th in a time of 59.75, in the 400 free final Grace took silver in a time of 4.15.44.
Rachael Williamson age 17 won gold in the 200 fly in a time of 2.16.83, gold in 400 free 4.13.87, obtained bronze in the 100 free in a time of 57.97. Rachael also qualified for the 200 free and 100 fly finals which she was ranked 1st & 2nd but was unable to swim due to a prior engagement. All Rachael's swims were short course PB this weekend.
The Senior/Junior girls also competed in relays, in the first relay which was the 400 freestyle they managed a bronze medal in a time of 3.58.98 which the team consisted of Grace Dennis, Dervla Curran, Jace Cappleman and Amy Felgate. Then it was the 400 Medley relay which again they claimed bronze just missing out on silver, in a time of 4.27.59 this team consisted of Grace Dennis, Leah Altoft, Rachael Williamson and Dervla Curran. Saving the best relay race till last was the team of Rachael Williamson, Grace Dennis, Dervla Curran and Jace Cappleman seeing them win gold in a time of 8.22.27 clear winners by 11 seconds, fantastic way to finish a weekend.
