Squad Criteria

Swimmers improve from three main aspects; Technique, Growth and Training. Young swimmers will generally improve from growth and technique alone, but at youth/age, attending sessions becomes essential to improvement, having a huge affect on performance, strength, skill & fitness.

Attendance

Minimum 7 sessions BUT will be subject to individual assessment/requirement, leading to 8/9 sessions.

Compulsory Sessions

All swimmers are to attend Monday & Saturday AM sessions.

Technique

Technique is a swimmers most important requirement to being successful. Technique takes focus and concentration on the task. Having a sound foundation of technique allows the athlete to build in the necessary intensity and volume that is required later on in a swimmers career without skill levels breaking down.

Training Ethos

Training is extremely important to a swimmers development as at certain periods of development they will be more receptive to different types of training. A swimmers ability to train well will have a direct impact as to whether they capitalise on that area of progression. A swimmers ability to train will be evaluated on Work Ethic, Concentration, Skill acquisition, communication, and ability to train at a required pace or volume with out breaking down in skill levels.

At Youth level swimmers need to have the right mental attitude and the will to want to train to improve. Sessions will be challenging but in order for performance to increase, these sessions must be met with the right mental attitude to gain the maximum benefit.

Racing Abilities

In any competitive sport the ability to race is extremely important, swimming is no different. As each swimmer goes through the programme, racing requirements will become more advanced from showing an enjoyment of racing to performing at National level.

Log Books

Completing a log book is a very important part of a swimmers education. They allow the swimmer and coach to see a progression in training ability weather this is pace work or stroke counting as well as being an excellent form of communication between swimmer, coach and parent.

A log book is a key tool for swimmers and coaches. If a swimmer is truly interested in their progression and would like regular feedback then a log book is a key tool to each individual's kit.

Discipline

Every swimmers behaviour will be taken into consideration as part of the squads selection process.

Training Basics

After the prep phase, at the start of each swimming year, swimmers will be expected to be able to hold form in repetition of 100, 200, 400 and 800 or 1500 front crawl.

Swimmers will be expected to hold form in Speed, Threshold and Pace sets.

All swimmer's must be able to kick off 2.0 min base per 100m.

Will be expected to swim Freestyle off 1.25 base per 100 and IM off 1.40.

Gym Sessions

These sessions should be attended by everyone. They are part of the whole picture in assisting in increased core stability, specific strength exercises, improved flexibility and body alignment.

Band work will be an essential part of training pre pool. Training is intense so injury prevention exercises must be carried out everyday.

Swimmers will be able to show a filled in log book with the following covered.

  • The training set
  • Total metres in the session
  • Weekly & Cumulative Totals
  • Training times
  • Comments on training sets
  • Personal best times recorded in the back
  • A height chart
  • Comments on your races after competitions. What did you learn etc
  • Your goals, short, medium and long term

It's that time of year again, time for Kingston upon Hull Swimming Club to review the last 12 months, assess our position financially and most crucially appoint the Trustees who will oversee the running of the club for the next 12 months.

We extend a warm invitation to everyone to attend our Annual General Meeting on Friday, 20th March 2015, starting at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre, Sutton Road, Hull in the creche
